iChat (formerly iChat AV) is an instant messagingsoftware application by Apple Inc. for their Mac OS Xoperating system. It has audio, video and screen-sharing capabilities as well as text messaging.
iChat will allow anyone and everyone (not just Mac users) to communicate immediately and efficiently at school or at home. iChat provides text, voice or video chat options to users.
How will I use it in the classroom?
Communication with other teachers / staff - instantly - no need to check email
iChat will work at home too - just need an internet connection
Document transfer - iChat allows users to transfer Word docs, pdfs, powerpoint files etc.
Student collaboration - working in small groups in the same classroom, down the hall or around the world students can collaborate.
Video-conferencing with other classrooms, schools, experts in the field.
To set up iChat:Step One- Get an AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) Screen Name by clicking HERE. You will need a 'creative' or 'unique' screen name.This is what the page will look like:

Step Three (optional): Some iChat users want to use a 'buddy icon' which is just a little image or avatar that identifies themselves to other users. It shows up in you buddy list. You can find 'buddy icons' by googling those keywords (buddy icon), however, here are a few good sites to try: (the sites below provide an abundance of icons for you to use, however, some may be inappropriate for students):
So, what do I do once I get a buddy icon? Click on the icon that you want to use and drag it to your desktop. Then, when you see the image on your desktop and you have iChat set up, drag the buddy icon onto the buddy icon placeholder in the top right corner of your buddy list. You can have multiple buddy icons and change them seasonally or according to your mood.
